a memory of when i first heard about about this was a reaction of

and then ongoing puzzlement.

they would sneak into people's apartments and steal their underwear or pull hair from the drain.

When the Berlin Wall fell, the Stasi headquarters were ransacked. In a small room revellers found hundred of jars labelled with people’s names and stuffed with pieces of fabric. These pieces of fabric contained the smell of hundreds of people that the secret police considered to be dissenters, and were to be used to train East German smell hounds. The jars can now be seen in the Stasi Museum in Berlin.

There were a number of tactics that the Stasi used to collect smells, originally they handed the subjects a yellow cloth and asked them to wipe an armpit or groin. Then they invented "the smell sample chair", a perforated metal chair with a tray underneath the seat where they put the yellow cloth to collect sweat and scent which dropped down. Finally, they also broke into peoples homes and stole their clothes and underwear.

In 2007, the German authorities revived this tactic and started to put together a database of scents, they began with possible violent protesters at the G8 summit who were made to hold metal rods from which their scents were collected.

The smell of Stasi fabrics was recreated this year by contemporary art curator Robert Blackson and his smell consultants, in an art exhibition called “If There Ever Was – a book of extinct and impossible smells”. Along with the Stasi smell, they created the smell of the sun (similar to brass polish), of Hiroshima (metallic and pungent) and the Mir Space Station (the smell of sweaty socks – vodka and body odour meant that Mir’s air filtration system became blocked with formaldehyde and stopped working)

NASA employs a team to smell every single piece of equipment which goes onto its space flights. George Aldrich and his team ensure that no items which could change the delicate balance of the climate of the International Space Station and the space shuttle.

She called me that morning and asked if I could bring over a movie and
a german chocolate milkshake.
I grabbed Big Fish and went over there....

I found my mom in the bath tub.
She had shot herself in the head.

On the dining room table..
She had organized important folders, papers and instructions for me.

There was also a note from her that said...

one man told of how he quit his job because he wasn't going to get a paycheck next week anyway.
kids talked about how they were excited about never having to do chores or homework again.
some sit stunned and some drive back home in their mini vans and beg for their jobs back.
and now they are sad because they didn't get to disappear.

The classic study of "doomsdays gone bad" took place in 1954. A Chicago woman named Dorothy Martin predicted a cataclysmic flood from which a few true believers would be saved by aliens. Martin and her cult, The Seekers, gathered the night before the expected flood to await the flying saucer. Unbeknown to them, however, their group had been infiltrated by psychologist Leon Festinger, who hoped to find out what happens when the rug of people's beliefs is pulled out from under them.

Festinger's study, which became the basis of the book "When Prophecy Fails" (Harper-Torchbooks 1956), revealed that as the appointed time passed with no alien visitors, the group sat stunned. But a few hours before dawn, Martin suddenly received a new prophecy, stating that The Seekers had been so devout that God had called off the apocalypse. At that, the group rejoiced — and started calling newspapers to boast of what they'd done. Eventually, the group fell apart.

ACTRESS, HUSBAND SENTENCED TO JAIL

Los Angeles, Mar. 11 (UP)Mary Nolan, blonde film actress, and her husband, Wallace T. Macrery, Jr., to-day were sentenced to serve thirty days in the county jail for failure to pay wage claims.
Municipal Judge Clement D. Nye sentenced Miss Nolan to 750 days and her husband to 840 days but in each case he suspended all but thirty days.

Born Mary Imogene Robertson in Kentucky, Robertson's childhood was beset with hardship that included the death of her mother in 1908 and an absent father. As a child, she worked as a farm laborer, before moving to New York City in 1919 where she worked as a model. Before long, she was discovered by Florenz Ziegfeld, who hired her under the name Imogene Wilson (the first of three name changes she was to have) as a dancer in hisfollies. As a showgirl in New York she was called Bubbles.

She began a long and abusive relationship with comedian Frank Tinney, which would culminate in being hospitalised for injuries he inflicted on her during an argument. Because Tinney was married to another woman, the affair caused a scandal. Mary Robertson was fired from theZiegfeld Follies and subsequently moved to Germany for two years. While in Germany, she made a large number of films.

Moving back to the United States in 1927, Robertson adopted the stage name Mary Nolan and had a brief film career, starring in films such as The Foreign Legion, Shanghai Lady, and Docks of San Francisco. She made Sorrel and Son for United Artists in 1927, but her film career declined afterwards. In 1928 she co-starred with two great actors, Lon Chaney and Lionel Barrymore, inWest of Zanzibar in what is arguably today her most well-known and heartbreaking silent film role as Chaney's defiled daughter raised in the dives of an African coastal town. In 1933, she made her final screen appearance in File 113. The same year, she sued Hollywood producer Eddie Mannix for $500,000 in damages. She accused him of beating her. In 1937, Nolan was jailed for an unpaid dress bill.

She turned up "sick and broke" at the Actor's Fund Home in Amityville, New York. She regained her health and returned to Hollywood in 1939. She lived there in obscurity with her sister, Mrs. Mabel Rondeau.

Unable to gain work, she became addicted to heroin and died of cardiac arrest on Halloween day, October 31, 1948. She suffered from a chronic gall bladder ailment and had recently been discharged from Cedars of Lebanon Hospital. She was 42 and weighed only 90 pounds when she died in a small stucco bungalow at 1504 South Mansfield Avenue, Los Angeles, California.

Her tiny apartment was simply furnished except for a single possession. There was a huge antique piano formerly owned by Rudolph Valentino, which almost filled her living room. She bought it from the possessions which were once a part of Falcon Lair, Valentino's home. Nolan revered the deceased film actor and kept his photo on the music rack.

Nolan had only recently completed negotiations for the sale of her life story, in screenplay and novel form. She previously sold a similar account to a popular magazine, the second installment of which had only recently been printed.

The drawing, which dates from the late 1600s, offers a rare insight into the appearance of the flightless bird that was the first recorded casualty of human interference in the habitat of other creatures.

The inscription above the bird, 'Dronte', was the Dutch 17th-century name for the dodo

Dodos were the main predators on Mauritius until settlers introduced bigger animals to Indian Ocean island, including pigs. Many were shipped to Europe as curiosities or had their nesting areas destroyed and the species was extinct by 1700.

The 350-year-old drawing, described by Christie's as “vibrant”, is one of a small number of images of the unfortunate bird whose demise was largely unnoticed until a dodo featured in Lewis Carroll’s popular 1865 book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

Painted by an unknown artist of the 17th century Dutch school in about 1650, the unframed 10x8 inch picture is expected to fetch up to £6,000 when it is sold by Christie’s in London on July 9.

The auction house believes it differs from existing images, many of which were drawn from a small number of dodos that were put on display in Europe, some of which were later stuffed.

In the mid-1950s, Welles began work on Don Quixote, initially a commission from CBS television. Filming stopped with the death of Francisco Reiguera, the actor playing Quixote, in 1969. Orson Welles continued editing the film into the early 1970s. At the time of his death, the film remained largely a collection of footage in various states of editing. how he founded Laugh-O-Gram Studios:

In May 1922, Disney founded Laugh-O-Gram Films with $15,000. The company got an $11,000 contract to produce six fairy tale cartoons forPictorial Clubs, Inc., which went bankrupt; a seventh fairy tale was sold to them separately. Among Disney's employees on the series were several pioneers of animation: Ub Iwerks, Hugh Harman, Rudolph Ising, Carmen Maxwell, and Friz Freleng.

The company had problems making ends meet: by the end of 1922, Disney was living in the office, taking baths once a week at Union Station.

Thomas McCrum, a Kansas City dentist saved him from total failure when he commissioned Disney for $500 for Tommy Tucker's Tooth^[1]^[2], a short subject showing the merits of brushing your teeth.^[3]

After creating one last short, the live-action/animation Alice's Wonderland, the studio declared bankruptcy in July 1923. Disney then moved to Hollywood, California. Disney sold his movie camera, earning enough money for a one-way train ticket; he brought along an unfinished reel of Alice's Wonderland.

Rosemary Trout Dijon

by the Campfire

ingredients needed:

Fresh caught Lake Trout
Dijon Mustard
Olive Oil
Rosemary

Cooking instructions:
In a cup or bowl, make a sauce of about 50% dijon mustard and 50% olive oil. Mix well, then slather liberally over all sides of your trout fillets. Sprinkle lot's of fresh rosemary over the trout (all sides) and then wrap trout into foil packets.
Place directly on hot coals of the fire for about 10 minutes per side, depending on how much trout is in each packet. Open up and dig in!
Variations/Hints:
If you have some onion, slice it up and throw it in as well. No dijon? Almost any decent mustard will do. Don't use the plain old bright yellow mustard though. Only the good stuff.

spent all day at the antique flea market.
talked to some people.
an interesting man named rick who i had seen before and got a nice old typewriter table from.
a women that i bought a gypsy costume from. we talked about our relatives back in prague.

here are the finds i found :

- an orange california rainbow bowl [ fake bauer with rings]
- gypsy halloween costume from 1940's [with black lace mask]
- photo of two women in sombrero's and western skirts on horses in front of rock [1906]

stopped and had a hot dog...

- small art deco utilitarian typewriter table with wheels [1940's]
- vintage yellow dress that smells like fomalderhyde or old moth balls
- a wind up skunk toy with 'caution' sign in his mouth along with some other orphaned toys
- phillips 66 gas station tire display holder

and now to find some salmon sushi...

velvets, vanilla and pumpkins

found some really nice giant pumpkins yesterday.
got some tiny pee wee ones too.
they are now arranged perfectly next to the marigolds
in the front courtyard. henry, the orange cat helped..

so- iv'e been decorating all week for halloween
and looking up some very tasty
pumpkin-y things to stir up.
i found a pretty good vanilla pumpkin martini recipe-
but- i'm going to conjure up my own version instead:

1 oz. grey goose vodka
1 oz. pumpkin puree
1 oz. fresh lemon juice
a few drops of simple syrup
-shake all that up really good...
then add
a few drops of pure vanilla
and a sprinkle of nutmeg on top

since all week, i have been dedicating nico and the velvet underground
to myself on my itunes and ipod...it continues.
today will also be an all day velvet underground marathon...

and now back to decorating

and then off to the market to find

This is the world’s only known complete collection of these creatures; this set of three was purchased in the late 1930’s and has remained intact. Created by Dr. Seuss, these sculptures were first carved from wood, then hand painted and mounted onto small plaques.

This collection would have been originally purchased in the late 1930’s. They were kept in a child’s room, and eventually retired to the storage barn next to a chicken coop in upstate New York. The set was acquired for a substantial sum in 2004. Though aged and weathered, restoration was not considered for several reasons. They are perfectly charming, and the need of a face-lift is a matter of opinion, because the personalities remain intact. The aged quality imparts character and denotes the history of these priceless pieces of Americana. These museum pieces were later copied and reproduced as limited edition sculptures by The Chase Group, the licensee of the fine art property originally created by Dr. Seuss. The limited edition Blue-Green Abelard was re-created in a smaller edition size than the other contemporary sculptures; only 375 pieces. The Tufted Gustard was 375 pieces and the Mulberry Street Unicorn was 850 pieces. All of those resin limited editions are going for big bucks, which is a good way to gage the value of the originals! The limited edition of the Blue-Green Abelard currently retails in the range of 25-28k! and The Tufted Gustard for 15k! The entire collection is sensationally popular, because the sculptures are not dead old taxidermy beasts, but Unorthodox Taxidermy, filled with whimsy and life!

Today the pieces are part of a larger and very intriguing exhibition by Dr Seuss, in a mideival fortress in France, Chateau de Belcastel, which is a historical monument that is open to the public. The collection includes a pen & ink that was published in The Judge magazine in 1927 featuring Horton’s predecessor and strange creatures and eunuchs. Dr Seuss kept his paintings in his studio, but he created one as a charitable contribution, entitled “Raising Money For the Arts,” which is the only original painting by Dr Seuss on public display in the world, as far as we know. (At some point in time, Dr Seuss’s collection of paintings will go to a museum--either in Springfield Massachusetts or UCSD in Southern California.) Dr Seuss first used some of these original sculptures in his Esso oil advertising campaign, and photographs of the artist holding various sculptures from this collection are featured in many historical archives as well as the book “The Art of Dr Seuss.” The collection is called “Unorthodox Taxidermy,” and was critically acclaimed. A Retrospective and National Touring Exhibition that was launched in 2001 featured educational panels about it, and the biography, “The Seuss, the Whole Seuss and Nothing but the Seuss” by historian Charles D Cohen writes extensivly about these sculptures.

Due to the delicate nature of the sculptures, the winner of this rare collection and a guest will be flown to the Chateau where the buyer can oversee the packing, and transport the pieces safely away. Travel and lodging for three nights in the Castle's Romantic and luxerious Tower suite is included courtesy of Animazing Gallery. This is a trip fit for a "king".

Unorthodox Taxidermy

Geisel embarked on an ingenious project in the early 1930’s as he evolved from two-dimensional artworks to three-dimensional sculptures. What was most unusual for these mixed media sculptures was the use of real animal parts including beaks, antlers and horns from deceased Forest Park Zoo animals where Geisel’s father was superintendent. His “Collection of Unorthodox Taxidermy” was born in a cramped New York apartment and included a menagerie of inventive creatures with names like “Two Horned Drouberhannis,” “Andulovian Grackler.” And “Goo Goo Eyed Tasmanian Wolghast.” Shortly after Geisel created this unique collection of artworks, Look Magazine dubbed Ted Geisel “The World’s Most Eminent Authority on Unheard-Of Animals.” To this day, Ted’s unorthodox taxidermy remains as some of the finest examples of his inventive and multi-dimensional creativity.

This is a story about W. Reginald Bray.

Bray lived for most of his life in Forest Hill, Kent from birth in 1879 to 1938 before moving to Croydon where he passed away in 1939. His lifelong passion was to send items through the post that, in one form or other, challenged the Postal system. He even had himself "delivered" on more than one occasion having paid the requisite postage. After experimenting with a number of postal curios his main focus was on the collection of autographs through the post. He sent out thousands of cards to all types of people, ranging from the Pope to the local Station Master, asking for them to return the relevant item duly autographed.

Over the years Reginald amassed over 15,000 autographs, declaring himself the Autograph King - a title that was undisputed by his peers.

He posted onions, turnips, combs and curios...

just got back from a trip to Kauai.

this was a view from the hotel looking out at

Shipwreck beach.

this is a crane that lives in the lagoon.

we would pass by her every day and say

'Hello-

Lovely Lady'!

that is her name by the way...

she always said hello back to us..

and

one day we drove all the way up to the

Waimea Canyon and stopped at all the lookouts.

this was a little nene [chicken] that followed us to the edge of this

lookout and back.

she was just one of the several nene's that were everywhere we went.

i got to go onboard the queen mary and

help james play music for our

friend's wedding reception-

it was for jamie and peter's romantic day!

it was also the art deco society weekend aboard the ship-

so there were many people strolling around

the decks wearing their time machine pieces.

i wore this really long, 1930's inspired dress..

before i moved up to portland,
i went to a garage sale at a tune up and car repair garage that was closing down
in my neighborhood.
they mostly had crates of oily parts and dirty tools for sale.
there were some things mixed underneath the grime
that i found to be interesting. when i asked about them, an older man came out and told me that he had been collecting spaghetti western memorabilia for a while and that those were his.
one of the things
i found was an oil stained frame with a movie still photo in it.
it was a scene from the film above.
the scene where the man is being dragged behind a horse.
i hung it on the kitchen wall in the portland home and i would look at it while having my morning coffee.
then arcade fire came out this song and video and i thought it went together perfectly...

this is a song that i can listen to over and over...
and i do.

it was very hot yesterday in the desert.
drove and drove.
nobody was outside.

got to destination
and then went and visited jamie and the girls at their pool.

came back to my place, grabbed a fish taco
and then fugu and i took a night walk outside under the stars.

we heard a million cicadas singing in the trees...

we tried to see if we could see any of them.

fugu looked up. i looked around.

no luck. they hide really well.

we walked back and when we got into our room,

they were very loud...

we thought that they might be in the walls.

then we went to sleep

they are still singing
and it is still very hot.

a 1967 russian poster of the pacific ocean just came in the post...
and out and about today---
found a gilbert microscope set polaroid junior with a microscope so you can watch shrimp eggs hatch..
also found a handsome painting of a cat smiling behind a tree with red berries from the 1930's..
going to frame that in a moment and put in on the wall by the sofa. it will make people smile the instant they gaze upon it.

in other news-

went and saw the dead weather at the warfield in san francisco the other night. they were really good and the ceiling was nice to look at. i bought a tint little pin that is a rifle that says the dead weather really tiny on it and i will put in on a lapel of a jacket.

also went to the academy of sciences in golden gate park and wondered around the aquarium and the rainforest exhibit looking at the little orange frogs and big spiders building big webs and the penguins diving into the water. i would really like to go back when it is at night and 21 and over. i think it will be more enjoyable.

This is a diorama at the Colorado History Museum...

Carlotta Espinoza is working to secure the figures,

many of which she resculpted during restoration work in the 1980s,

shown above. The diorama was cut into four sections Friday as the museum packs up for its move into a new building.

it's a 1937 Brantford travel coach that was made in Ontario, Canada.

this one is a bit out of my price range - so

a rare metal eating bird intermission

an interesting little piece created by Charley Bowers in 1930...

' Charley goes on a quest for a rare metal-eating bird. He meets with a Professor Ditterhoffer of the Natural History Museum who illustrates his points with a series of cartoon-y illustrations (undoubtedly drawn by Bowers himself) which bear a striking resemblance to the later work of Dr. Seuss. And then Charley is off to the Belgian Congo, accompanied by a German Oompah band, where he locates the goofy-looking bird and then manages to capture him with the help of a worm who inexplicably talks like a Brooklyn thug. The bird and the worm are impressively animated puppets: in the mid- to late 1920s Bowers starred in a series of films in which the puppet animation sequences were usually the highlights. The puppet scenes in IT'S A BIRD are weird and delightful, and feature a number of off-the-wall Bowers motifs from the earlier series, such as animals eating metal and then hatching machines from their eggs. '

snowy vacation

yesterday - was a relaxing drive through some

of the best scenery in the country - in my opinion.

fugu, james and i

drove up the 395 - stopping a few times along the way

for grassy spots and then at Schat's bakery in Bishop for some provisions.

12 grain bread, cheese, peanut butter

and some of their homemade

doggy crackers.

when we started winding up into the mountains -

an excitement and energy - like a breath of crisp, fresh air took over!

the feeling of being a kid, making snowmen

and tearing down the mountain all start getting planned in my head - before we even get to

the snow covered cabin!

and the views...

simply terrible huh.
